Unclaimed benefits has become regarded an industry-wide problem to the Board of Trustees of Pension and Provident Funds as all of the Fund’s assets and liabilities cannot be accounted for as these include unclaimed benefits.

RFA (Pty) Ltd established RFLIPF Unclaimed Benefit Preservation Provident Fund with effect from 1 September 2009 to assist the Trustees of these Funds to find a new home for these unclaimed benefits
to lighten the burden associated with it.
Who is this Fund for?
RFLIPF Unclaimed Benefit Preservation Provident Fund is available to the Board of Trustees of any Pension and/or Provident Fund whose objective is to preserve their Fund’s unclaimed benefits in an effective
and efficient unclaimed benefit vehicle.

This could include unclaimed benefits accrued in their Fund in respect of members, former members, nominees and/or dependants.

When does a benefit become unclaimed?
With effect from 1 September 2009, a benefit becomes unpaid if the benefit is not paid by a fund to a member, former member or beneficiary within 6 months of the date on which it, in terms of the rules of the fund,
became legally due and payable.

Benefits may only be transferred to Unclaimed Benefit Fund if not
claimed within a period of 6 months.
